We don’t often talk about restaurants here, there have only been a few worth mentioning. Only a few that stick out as a highlight of a destination.
In fact, there are only two that really stick out as places that we would without a doubt head to our first meal in town. The last one I can remember was in Koh Lipe, Thailand, but in Krakow, it was Pod Wawelem.
We ate here three times in the short time we had in Krakow. Every time we sat down we were more than satisfied with our meals. The portions are huge and you can easily split most of the mains with two people, but not so absurd that you need to.
Hannah had the schnitzel and fries and it came to the table on two plates, one for the meat that took up the entire plate and the second for a heap of French fries. It was our go-to place to fuel up for a busy day of sightseeing in Krakow.

My favorite meal was the sausage platter that we split ‘the office’s platter’ that had different meats & sausages from the grill like kielbasa, blood sausage, more sausage, chicken breast, steak, rice, potatoes, and white cabbage. The real draw to the restaurant is the value for the money. For just $10 or 30 Z you get a monster plate of some awesome polish food.
Pod Wawelem is located a few blocks from the main square close to the Castle of Krakow. The one downside is that it’s not exactly a secret, and it’s busy from the moment the doors open. During the summer, there may be a wait for an outdoor table, but it’s worth it on a nice day since the inside tables are a little warm.

In all our European travels the best dining experience we ever had was in Kraków at Pod Aniolami. The perogies, the service, the company, the huge indoor/outdoor dining room all to ourselves and the parakeets made it a magical experience! Next time we will try this place.

That is one of my favorite restaurants in Krakow as well. Love the wiener schnitzel with lemon. So delicious.

On the weekends they also had live music, Polish style. This place was the highlight... maybe it's the Milwaukee in us, I mean Polish!
