How Long is A Myanmar Visa Valid?
Myanmar eVisa’s are valid for 90 days from the issued date. Our visas were issued on December 28th, 2016 and therefore they were valid until March 28, 2017. The eVisa however, is only valid for a 28-day stay and it’s a single entry.
So if you plan on spending 2 weeks in Myanmar and then 2 weeks in Thailand but want to go back to Myanmar you’ll have to apply for another Myanmar visa on your return trip. If you’d like to stay longer than 28 days in Myanmar you could overstay your visa, more detail below.
Overstaying On A Myanmar Visa
If you happen to fall in love with Myanmar and want to spend more than 28 days it is possible to overstay your visa. In other countries like Thailand, you’d go and get a visa extension in advance but in Myanmar, you’ll just pay an overstay fee. The cost to overstay a Myanmar visa is $3 per day. Unlike Thailand that charges 500 baht a day for overstaying.
At the international airports, you’ll see a sign for Immigration Over Stay this is where you’ll pay the additional fee for overstaying Myanmar visa. They will put an overstay stamp/stay permitted in your passport, don’t worry this isn’t a bad thing like in other countries. I have been told you can also pay the overstay fee at the land borders, but haven’t personally been there to witness this.
Note: While you are traveling around Myanmar your visa will have an expiration date that has expired and some guesthouses will not allow you to stay there on an expired visa. They are afraid of getting in trouble with the government as the hotels are very compliant with the rules. You can try and explain to them you are overstaying Myanmar visa and paying the fee when leaving.
Myanmar is an amazing country and one that we urge travelers to get to sooner than later. Myanmar is changing at a rapid pace and we felt our trip in 2017 was even a few years late. We would have loved to travel to Myanmar 10 years ago.
That being said, you can still climb up the temples and get some epic views which is likely to change soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if UNESCO put a stop to this in the coming years limiting the number of temples travelers can access.
