Suggested Two Week Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary

This is how we would spend our two-week honeymoon in Thailand if we did it all over again after experiencing these amazing places over the past three years of living in Thailand. Adjust it to fit your style and switch out honeymoon destinations based on your taste and interests.

One thing to keep in mind while planning your Thailand honeymoon itinerary is to be sure not to add too many destinations but rather truly enjoy the places you visit.

We suggest not planning more than four destinations on your honeymoon itinerary because travel time between the cities will take away from actually enjoying your honeymoon. Here’s what our perfect Thailand honeymoon would look like.

Best place in Bangkok to stay - Sukhumvit Street in Bangkok - Where to stay in Bangkok

Days 1-3: Bangkok

Bangkok is the biggest international terminal, and you’ll likely land here when starting your honeymoon. We think Bangkok is the best introduction to Thailand and an overall fascinating city.

Spend the first few days of your honeymoon seeing the sights and recovering from your jet lag. Stay at a luxurious 4-star hotel for under $150 a night.  The capital city of Thailand, Bangkok, is huge, and where you stay can make or break your trip. Make sure to read our Where to stay in Bangkok guide.

We have been to Bangkok over a dozen times and fall in love with the city more and more after every visit. Make sure to read our 3 days in Bangkok guide to help plan your days. Some of the best things to do in Bangkok include visiting the Grand Palace, exploring a local market like the Chatuchak Weekend Market, checking out the shopping malls in Bangkok (our favorite mall is Siam Square), and watching the sunset from high above in a sky bar in Bangkok.

Alternatively, you may want to get straight to one of the best beachfront resorts and recover from jet lag on the white sand beaches of Thailand. That’s not a bad plan either, so we would suggest modifying your itinerary to put Bangkok at the end of the trip because it will likely be the airport you leave from.

One thing to note is this will result in an extra transfer and potentially a shuttle transfer to the beach destination. This additional travel after a long-haul flight may sound like a good idea from your couch at home, but it might not be the most pleasant way to start your honeymoon.

Sunrise Beach of Koh Lipe - Best beach in Koh Lipe

Days 4-9: The Beach (choose one from the destinations below)

After the intense big city of Bangkok, catch a flight south to one of the many Thai beach destinations to get a few days of relaxation on your honeymoon.

We personally suggest Koh Lipe for a relaxing and beautiful Thailand honeymoon, but if you are looking for a bigger party scene, you might opt for Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, or Krabi. Go on a Thailand island hopping adventure and visit several islands.

Days 10-14: A bit of Thai Culture

To round out your trip, head to one of the country’s many culturally rich destinations. There are a number to choose from, but we highly recommend a trip to the north to cities like Chiang Mai and Chaing Rai. There are over 300 Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai. We’ve trimmed it down to our top 10 temples in Chiang Mai.

If you’re taking a Thailand Honeymoon in April, head to the Songkran Chiang Mai festival every April 13-15th to celebrate the Thai New Year. We lived in Chiang Mai and attended the festival four times. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, I would not visit during the festival dates.

Alternatively, if you and your new husband or wife are not big culture buffs and would rather have a more adventurous honeymoon, you might opt for a trip to Kanchanaburi or Koh Sok Lake. Both are perfect for nature lovers.

Party animals might want to check out the Phi Phi Islands or Koh Pha Ngan, and those wanting to do some scuba diving might want to explore Koh Tao. There is something for every honeymoon in Thailand.

Ending Your Thailand Honeymoon Properly

If you plan your honeymoon itinerary properly, you can leave Thailand late in the day on the last day of your trip so there is time in your itinerary to fly from Chiang Mai (or whichever city you choose to finish) and not have to spend an additional night in Bangkok if you don’t wish to.

Keep in mind there are two airports in Bangkok, and almost all international flights to Europe and North America will leave from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). In contrast, most domestic (all Air Asia flights) will land in Bangkok at Don Muang Airport (DMK). Transport between the two airports is relatively easy to arrange but can take several hours with Bangkok traffic.

If leaving from Chiang Mai (and other cities in Thailand), there are multiple daily flights on Thai Smile (Thai Airways) that land in Bangkok at BKK. This way, no airport transfer is needed, making the last day of your Thai honeymoon a little less stressful. Flight prices are generally the same as other carriers flying into DMK airport.

A colorful longtail boat sways in the turquoise clear water of Koh Lipe, Thailand. If we were to do it again, our honeymoon would definitely be here!

1. Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe, also known as “The Maldives of Thailand.” When you compare anything to the Maldives, it’s got big shoes to fill. But Koh Lipe does it. We have spent five weeks island hopping in the Maldives and four weeks in Koh Lipe (on three different trips). It is one of our favorite places in Southeast Asia.

If a Maldives honeymoon is out of your budget, then a honeymoon in Koh Lipe is the spot. Koh Lipe is a magical paradise floating in the middle of the Andaman Sea with insane turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. Several of the best places to stay have pool villas with private pools. Our pick for one of the best romantic places to stay would be Serendipity.

Traveling to Koh Lipe is only accessible by boat year-round from Pak Bara, Thailand, and from Langkawi, Malaysia & other Thai islands from November to April. There is no ferry during the rainy season. Click here for the Koh Lipe ferry schedule and tickets.

Nightlife in Koh Phi Phi starts with a good seafood BBQ followed by a fire show and then a few too many Thai buckets or Chang beers.

If you want a quiet, peaceful honeymoon, you may want to choose another destination or opt to stay in the quieter Long Beach area of the island. There are several ferries to Koh Phi Phi from other Thai islands click here for the schedule and prices.

Things to do in Koh Phi Phi: Rent a longtail boat for the day, take a private tour out to Maya Bay, and check out all the gorgeous limestone cliffs. Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai Thailand a good early morning destination on a Thai Honeymoon
Early mornings at Doi Suthep temple is our favorite time to visit

18. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is often referred to as Thailand’s “Rose of the North.” There are over 200 temples in Chiang Mai. The city oozes culture. Avoid traveling to Chiang Mai in late February & March as this is “burning season,” where the farmers in the north literally burn the fields, creating this constant smoke lingering in the city. We think the best time to visit is November to January.

Fly right into Chiang Mai International Airport or click here for overland schedules.

Romantic Chiang Mai Honeymoon Hotels:

Suggested Nights In Chiang Mai: 2 to 3 nights

Things to do in Chiang Mai: Head up the mountain to Doi Suthep for the best views of Chiang Mai. Time your visit to celebrate the Thai New Year festival Songkran, which is basically one large squirt gun festival around April 13-15 of every year.

Get a 150 baht Thai massage or foot massage. Get a Sak Yant tattoo by a monk, a souvenir that will last a lifetime. Shop at the Saturday night market or Sunday night market, or the famous Chiang Mai Ladyboy Cabaret. Don’t leave town without trying the local dish Khao Soi.

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Place to Visit

19. Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya was once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam and the largest city in the world back in the 1700s. At that time, the population was estimated at 1 million people, but it’s nothing like that anymore.

Ayutthaya was almost burnt down to the ground back in 1767 when the Burmese invaded. Today there are some remains that give light on what the city used to be. The old city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular day trip from Bangkok. Click here for the Ayutthaya bus schedule and tickets.

Romantic Ayutthaya Honeymoon Hotels:

Golden Triangle Thailand Statue of Buddha
A giant Buddha is here to greet you as you near the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet

20. Golden Triangle

In Northern Thailand, not far from Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai, there are several luxury tented camps in the Golden Triangle. The Golden Triangle is where Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand intersect. It also happens to be where the Mekong River and Ruak River meet.

Spend the night in nature on the river but in luxury. Many of the resorts have rescued elephant programs, where you can interact with elephants in a responsible tourism manner. There are way too many elephant companies that aren’t ethically treating the animals, and that should be avoided. If you don’t want to know what those elephants have gone through, make sure to visit an elephant rescue place.

The nearest airport is Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai, click here for the shuttle schedule.

Romantic Golden Triangle Honeymoon Hotels:

  • Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort Booking.com
  • Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle Booking.com

Suggested Nights In Golden Triangle: 2 to 3 nights

Sunset at the famous white temple in Chiang Rai How Romantic!

21. Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a popular northern Thailand famous for “The White Temple” or Wat Rong Khun, which we would name the prettiest temple in Thailand.

Fly directly into Chiang Rai International Airport or easily take a shuttle from Chiang Mai, click here for the schedule and tickets. Chiang Rai could also be done as a day trip from Chiang Mai to avoid packing and moving hotels.

Romantic Chiang Rai Honeymoon Hotels:

Suggested Nights In Chiang Rai: 2 to 3 nights

Things to do in Chiang Rai: A visit to Chiang Rai wouldn’t be complete without going to the white temple. Head there early in the day or right before sunset to avoid the crowds. Visit the Black House. It’s hard to explain the Black House. It’s like a strange art museum. Rent a bike and explore the countryside.

Thailand Honeymoon Budget & Typical Costs

The biggest expense on a Honeymoon in Thailand is the international flight cost. Once you land in Thailand, things get much more affordable.

Traditionally, honeymoons involve above-average accommodation and hotels, which in Thailand are still not that expensive, and you can have luxury but on a relatively small budget. Below is the average spending on a honeymoon in Thailand based on our two-week honeymoon itinerary above.

International Flight Cost for a couple (2 people): $900-$2,000

Flights to Bangkok are becoming very budget-friendly from Europe and North America. If you are working with a smaller budget, look at flying from major cities near your home city. Prices in 2016-2017 from U.S. hubs are as low as $450 per person (roundtrip) and should not cost more than $1,000 per person.

Hotel Cost for a Two Week Thailand Honeymoon: $700-$2,100+

In Thailand, $100 per night will get you a honeymoon-worthy hotel room, and $150 per night will get you something even more lavish. You can spend up to $300 per night, and for that sum of money, you should be treated like a king or queen.

However, nice three-star rooms all over the country will run from $30-$50 per night and can help you save more money for the next trip.

Food and Drink Costs for a Thai Honeymoon: $700-1000

Food in Thailand is very budget-friendly, and you can eat like a king for very little money. Spending $50-75 per day for a couple, you should be able to have a nice dinner and several drinks, along with food for the rest of the day.

Related Article: Must Know Thailand Travel Tips

Transportation Costs in Thailand: $750 destination dependent

Flights within Thailand are very budget-friendly. Most flights should cost between $20-100 per person per flight. So if you visit four destinations, an estimate that’s $600, leaving you around $150 for taxis and airport shuttles.

Activities on a Thailand Honeymoon $750

Most day trips should average about $50 per person per day. If you plan half of your days as day trips, this would be seven days’ worth of activities, leaving some days to relax and others for transportation days.

Average Budget for a Thailand Honeymoon: $3,800-$6,600

This is a general estimate and could be much less expensive if you wanted it to be. However, to have the luxuries most expect from a honeymoon, these prices are realistic. Another factor that will make the trip more affordable is if you choose to visit fewer cities, it would reduce the travel costs.

However, our recommended honeymoon Itinerary is what we would do if it were our honeymoon, and it’s what we have recommended to our close friends wanting to honeymoon in Thailand.

Don’t forget your insurance! You never know when you’ll need it. We suggest getting travel insurance with Safety Wing. Which coverage includes medical, trip interruption, lost luggage, and more. Often, rates are as low as $12 a week.

Thank you for all the help, this is SO helpful! I just booked my flights to Thailand for our honeymoon and will be there Nov 23- Dec 4th. I am planning on starting in Bangkok for 1 or 2 nights, Chiang Mai for 3 nights, and then flying south for 6 nights but there are so many options! Krabi, Phuket, Phi Phi, and Ko Lanta. Which of these would you recommend visiting/staying? After reading your suggestions, I am also considering Koh Lipe! Thank you again

Hannah Lukaszewicz

Wednesday 15th of January 2020

We hope you have an amazing honeymoon. For a honeymoon, we would not suggest Koh Phi Phi unless you want more of a party loud scene. We would obviously suggest Koh Lipe and Serendipity or Ten Moons Resort. Otherwise, there are some great quiet romantic resorts in Phuket. Another place to look is koh yao noi or Koh Yao Yai there are some great luxury options there.

No matter where you go you'll have an amazing honeymoon in Thailand.

Hi!

My fiance and I are trying to debate between Bali and Thailand, but I think I would prefer Thailand. We have around 14 days, and want lots of beach and good food! What itinerary would you recommend?

Also, we are honeymooning in August, will the rain be really bad?

Thanks!

We personally would choose Thailand over Bali for a honeymoon BUT you are traveling in August which is rainy season in Thailand but dry season n Bali...so we would then say go to Bali to ensure better weather.

No matter which you choose you'll have an amazing honeymoon in Asia!

This is great! Thanks so much for making such a detailed post. My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon in Thailand for this December. Coming from Chiang Mai on Dec 29, it looks like we'll have time for islands for 5 days and then need to head to Bangkok on Jan 3 to head back to the States. I was thinking of doing Koh Samui with possibly some day trips to Koh Tao for diving, but after reading this am considering Koh Lipe instead as I read somewhere else that the gulf might be rainier during this time. I wanted your thoughts on (a) which side we should stay on (b) if there's any weather concerns on either side and (c) is either side preferable for New Years Eve activities? We'd be looking for some parties the night of but nothing too crazy.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Katherine - During that time of the year it will be busy everywhere, so I would book pretty far in advance to ensure you get the places you want. As for the weather, the past few years have been pretty unpredictable with current climate changes. Personally, I would suggest spending more time on the Andaman side in December and early Jan, we visited this past Christmas/New Years season and got rained out on the Koh Samui side with one of the worst storms in 60 years. I know we will wait deeper into the dry season before visiting that side again. We have had decent weather in December in Koh Lipe on our last visit - but every year is of course different. You can probably find a new years eve party to suit your taste on just about any island I would say so I wouldn't let that make your decision. Hope that helps a little bit and hope you have an amazing honeymoon in Thailand!

Hi Hannah and Adam!

I found your blog while doing some research for our Thailand honeymoon, and it was SO helpful! We are planning to go right after our wedding of this year, from roughly October 7th-21...about 15 days including travel. I have just a couple of questions if you don't mind taking the time to answer!

-We were originally thinking about doing Thailand and Bali, as we want to explore as much as we can! Is this too ambitious within our time frame and keeping in mind it's our honeymoon so we do want to relax? -We want a mixture of relaxation and adventure. Definitely thinking we'll fly into Bangkok, and definitely want to visit Chiang Mai and were also originally thinking Phuket and maybe Phi Phi Islands for beaches, but I've seen you advise against Phuket. Where else would you recommend to get both of these vibes? -Is the language barrier tough to navigate? And how easy is it to travel from place to place? -Is October a bad month to travel in Thailand? -Is there any other country you'd say would be a must for a honeymoon destination?

Thank you so much!! Hoping you guys can help us! All our best!

Congrats on the wedding and honeymoon! - We generally think 2 weeks with travel is really only enough for Thailand, you could squeeze it in but for the time and money you'd spend doing that you'd have a better time staying in one country. Phuket is just not our favorite - we went there on our honeymoon and we would have much rather spent our time anywhere else. Language is not generally a problem, there will be people who don't speak English but enough that do that it's easy enough. Traveling place to place is very easy we either fly searching skyscanner or book ground/land transfer with this company --> https://12go.asia/en/travel/thailand/?z=196379 October is rainy season, but I wouldn't let that stop me from going, just know it's probably going to rain for an hour or two everyday and somedays a bit more. Thailand is a great option and it's hard to top all of the different things you can do there and I can't say in October there is a better country to check out that fits what you are after. Happy planning let us know if you have questions!

Hi Hannah,

I'm really glad I came across your blog. My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Thailand this May. We will be flying in from Manila and I really want to go to Koh Lipe, and it looks like getting to Koh Lipe is easiest by way of Bangkok and that Air Asia package you recommended. My issue is I want to head to Koh Phi Phi and Krabi after Koh Lipe, but can't figure out the best way to do so since ferries aren't running after April 30. Any suggestions?

The Ferries don't run, but you can still visit the islands. You just need to do more of the travel by land. You can use this site to find the transport between the islands all year long. https://12go.asia/en/travel/pak-bara-pier/koh-lipe/?z=196379

Happy planning, and Enjoy Koh Lipe & Thailand!
